Is Kamakhya Temple part of the standard itinerary?

It's optional. We can build it into Day 1 if you'd like, just mention it when booking. If you'd rather move straight to Shillong, we skip it with no change to the rest of the plan.

Do we have to do the Double Decker Root Bridge Trek?

No. Day 3 covers Cherrapunji's waterfalls and Mawsmai Cave, a sightseeing day with no trekking involved. The root bridge trek is available as a swap if you'd prefer it instead, just let us know when booking.

What's the difference between Ptso Lake, Madhuri Lake, and Chumi Gyatse?

Ptso Lake and Madhuri Lake (also called Sangetsar Lake) are both covered on Day 9 as part of the Bumla Pass excursion. Chumi Gyatse is a separate site, the "108 sacred waterfalls" near the border, and can be added at an extra cost with advance notice.

Is the Jeep Safari at Kaziranga included, and can we do the Elephant Safari instead?

The Jeep Safari is included on Day 7. The Elephant Safari can be arranged as well, but it runs on a separate booking system with limited slots, so it depends on prior booking and availability on the day.

How demanding is this trip?

It's a long trip at 12 days, but nothing in it requires trekking fitness unless you choose the Double Decker Root Bridge option on Day 3. The rest of the itinerary is vehicle-based sightseeing, so reasonable fitness for a multi-day road trip is enough.

What's the best time of year for this circuit?

October to April works well for both halves of this trip. Meghalaya is at its greenest just after the monsoon (October-November), while the Tawang side is clearest from October through March, before heavy snow can close the higher passes.

Can this trip be shortened or customized?

Yes. If 12 days is more than you need, we also run the Meghalaya and Tawang sides separately as standalone 5-day trips, and can adjust this circuit's pace, drop Chumi Gyatse or the root bridge option, or extend with Sangti Valley if you'd like more time on the Arunachal side.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Guwahati to Shillong

We pick you up from Guwahati to begin the trip. If you'd like, we can start the day with a visit to Kamakhya Temple, one of Northeast India's most significant temples, this stop is entirely optional, just let us know when booking and we'll build it in. From there, we continue toward Shillong, with a stop at Umiam Lake along the way, followed by the Don Bosco Museum. Depending on how the day is going, we can fit in a few more stops around Shillong before checking in for the evening. Overnight stay in Shillong.

Day 2

Shillong to Cherrapunji

After breakfast, we set out via Shillong Peak and Elephant Falls, continuing on to the Dympep Valley Viewpoint before reaching Cherrapunji. We check in and settle in for the evening. Overnight stay in Cherrapunji.

Day 3

Cherrapunji Waterfalls

Today, we explore Cherrapunji's waterfalls, Nohkalikai Falls, Wei Sawdong Falls, and the Seven Sisters Falls, along with the limestone formations at Mawsmai Cave. Optional: if you'd like to trek instead, we can swap this day for the Double Decker Living Root Bridge, about 2.5 to 3 hours one way from Tyrna Village to Nongriat, with Rainbow Falls as a further add-on. Just let us know when booking. Overnight stay in Cherrapunji.

Day 4

Cherrapunji to Dawki via Mawlynnong

We continue sightseeing through Sohra before heading to Mawlynnong, known as Asia's cleanest village, where we take in its own Single Decker Root Bridge and the Balancing Rock. From there, we continue on to Dawki for the night. Overnight stay in Dawki.

Day 5

Dawki to Shillong via Krang Suri Falls

We start the day at Krang Suri Falls, known for its turquoise pool, before making our way back to Shillong via Jowai. Overnight stay in Shillong.

Day 6

Shillong to Kaziranga

Today is largely a travel day as we make our way to Kaziranga, reaching by evening. If a cultural program happens to be running that night, we can arrange for you to attend. Overnight stay in Kaziranga.

Day 7

Kaziranga to Dirang

We start with a Jeep Safari through Kaziranga National Park in the morning (an Elephant Safari can also be arranged, subject to prior booking and availability). After the safari, we begin the drive into Arunachal Pradesh, climbing into the hills and reaching Dirang by evening. Overnight stay in Dirang.

Day 8

Dirang to Tawang via Sela Pass

We continue toward Tawang, crossing Sela Pass, with stops at Sela Lake and the Jaswant Garh War Memorial along the way. Overnight stay in Tawang.

Day 9

Bumla Pass, Ptso Lake & Madhuri Lake

We head out to Bumla Pass on the Indo-China border, with stops at Ptso Lake and Madhuri Lake (Sangetsar Lake) before returning to Tawang. Optional: Chumi Gyatse, the "108 sacred waterfalls" near the border, can be added at an extra cost. Just let us know in advance. Overnight stay in Tawang.

Day 10

Tawang Monastery & Buddha Park to Dirang

We spend the morning exploring Tawang Monastery and the Buddha Park, then begin the drive back, stopping at Jung Falls along the way before reaching Dirang in the evening. Overnight stay in Dirang.

Day 11

Dirang to Shergaon

We continue on to Shergaon, a quiet village that's the perfect place to slow down after the longer stretch of the trip. Overnight stay in Shergaon.

Day 12

Shergaon to Guwahati

After breakfast, we begin the return drive to Guwahati, reaching by evening for departure.
